Cooper’s cardiothoracic anesthesiologists care for patients who will have heart or lung surgery. Most of these surgeries take place in state-of-the-art operating rooms at Cooper University Hospital.

Our team offers skilled and compassionate care as members of the multidisciplinary team of experts. Our physicians are board certified and have extensive experience and expertise in hypertension, echocardiography, arrhythmias, fluid therapy, perioperative neurological damage, and cardiothoracic critical care, as well as the following areas:
- Off-pump cardiac surgery
- Adult congenital cardiac surgery
- Esophageal surgery
- Aortic surgery
- Valvular surgery
- Atrial fibrillation surgery
- Robotic heart surgery
- Minimally invasive port access cardiac surgery
- Cardiac assist device surgery.
Specialized Care
- High-risk cardiac patients now have the therapeutic option of percutaneous transcatheter procedures. The cardiac anesthesia division is deeply involved in the multidisciplinary collaborative management of these percutaneous procedures. These procedures include transfemoral and transapical aortic valve replacements, mitral valve repairs, as well as paravalvular leak and septal defect repair.
- Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), a device that creates an image of your heart’s movement, is performed on almost every patient undergoing cardiac surgery. The staff of the cardiovascular anesthesia service is certified and well trained to use TEE to assess risks, guide therapy, and educate resident-anesthesiologists during their clinical rotation.
- Thoracic anesthesia is also an integral part of our practice. We use multiple techniques of anesthesia for thoracic surgery, including thoracic epidural analgesia, fiberoptic intubation, and lung isolation techniques.
