The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Center at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is uniquely equipped to offer patients in the region access to comprehensive, leading-edge care for both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

Causes of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer worldwide. While more common in individuals with lighter skin tones, anyone can develop skin cancer.
Several facts increase the risk of skin cancer, including:

  • Fair skin, blonde or red hair, and light-colored eyes
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • Excessive or prolonged sun exposure
  • Living in areas with intense sun exposure

The primary cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet (IV) radiation from the sun. People with lower levels of skin pigmentation are at higher risk, but skin cancer can affect people of all races and ethnicities.

Skin Cancer Prevention

While not all skin cancers can be prevented, you can reduce your risk by protecting your skin from the sun:

  • Apply sunscreen every morning – year round – even on cloudy days
  • Reapply sunscreen during extended sun exposure, especially when swimming or sweating
  • Wear a large hat and protective clothing when outdoors
  • Avoid sunbathing
  • Try to seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest
