A Team Approach to Prostate Cancer Care

Our Prostate Cancer Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment. Every patient is under the care of a team of specialists that meets regularly to determine and implement the optimal treatment plan for each patient. This team consists of urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, palliative care, and other cancer specialists. 

An important member of our team is our genitourinary cancer nurse navigator. Our disease-site nurse navigator serves as an educator, advocate, and guide for patients throughout their cancer journey.

Additional support is available from our genetics, nutrition, and behavioral health counselors, as well as our social worker team. All of these experts understand the special needs and concerns of men with genitourinary cancers and are committed to addressing these issues with compassion and respect.

Innovative Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

At MD Anderson at Cooper we develop personalized treatment plans for each patient. Plans are dependent on a variety of factors, including how advanced the condition is when diagnosed and the patient's overall health.

Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will have a choice in treatment options, which may include radiation therapy, urologic surgery, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy and targeted therapy - as well as watchful waiting and active surveillance.

Advanced Treatments

Our highly skilled team offers cutting-edge treatment options - some that are not available elsewhere in our region - and they are all close to home, so patients can avoid the hassle and inconvenience of traveling for frequent appointments. Our advanced treatments include:

• High Intensity Focused Ultrasound - an advanced new treatment that uses precisely targeted ultrasound ways to eliminate diseased prostate tissue in certain patients
• Pelvic floor (Retzius)-sparing robotic prostatectomy for a quicker return to continence and improved sexual function outcomes.
• MR-guided radiation treatment to precisely track and destroy the tumor in real time for highly targeted treatment.
• Radiopharmaceutical treatment administered through an IV for prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
• Chemotherapy and targeted therapies to destroy cancer cells.
• Hormone therapy to suppress the growth of prostate cancer.
• Active surveillance and watchful waiting to closely monitor the cancer without treatment for older patients and/or patients who have a very low-risk form of prostate cancer.
