My cancer story begins with my father. He was involved in a horrible auto accident and was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital. Around that time I started to develop gastrointestinal issues. But as months went on and things calmed down with my dad, my symptoms didn’t get any better. Specialized Surgery Gives Angela the Gift of Motherhood After Cervical Cancer

After four years of marriage, Angela and her husband decided they were ready to start a family. During an appointment with her Ob/Gyn, however, Angela discovered that her pap smear test results were abnormal. Further tests confirmed her fears that she would have to put off getting pregnant due to cervical cancer.

Angela, crushed at the thought of never living her dream of motherhood, met with David P. Warshal, MD, Head of Gynecological Oncology at MD Anderson at Cooper, who shared with her the option of a surgical procedure which could remove the cancer, but preserve her ability to have a child. Angela soon underwent the procedure, known as a radical trachelectomy. Years later she is cancer free and enjoying the joy of motherhood thanks to her beautiful daughter.

Ilene: Cancer Genetic Testing Saved My Life

Ilene, the eldest of three sisters, was devastated. Her middle sister, Laura, had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 44. The family, already very close, became even closer as they supported Laura through her treatment and recovery.  

Because of her age and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, Laura’s doctors suspected that she may be carrying a gene mutation that made her more susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer — and they were right. Genetic testing determined that Laura had a BRCA gene mutation, and her doctors recommended that both Ilene and Deena (the youngest of the three sisters) consider genetic testing to see if they, too, were at increased risk.

I was 34 years old and seven-and-a-half months pregnant when I felt a lump in my breast. It was the week before my baby shower. At first I thought, “My body is changing so much because of my pregnancy, it’s probably nothing,” but I figured I would just mention it to my doctor at my next prenatal appointment. She thought it was most likely a cyst, but ordered an ultrasound just to be sure. I knew when the technologist called the doctor into the room during the ultrasound that something was wrong.

Darlinda Bayard: Faith, Family, and MD Anderson at Cooper

I’m a widow with three grown children and 15 grandchildren. I’m a breast cancer survivor and community advocate. My story is very ironic.

For years I’ve worked with my family’s non-profit organization ministering to women of limited means throughout Burlington, Gloucester and Camden counties. Our foundation’s mission is to educate, motivate and support, not just the individual diagnosed with breast cancer, but their entire family.

I was very upset with myself. I had lost two cousins to breast cancer and been active with our family’s outreach program for quite a while, but when it was time for me to get my annual mammogram, I procrastinated and missed three appointments. Even though I was having symptoms and feeling fatigued, I still hesitated to see anyone or do anything.
