Biopsy: A Key Step in Diagnosis
A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from the body for laboratory examination. If cancer is present, a pathologist can determine what type it is and identify genetic markers or hormone receptors that may guide the most effective treatment plan.
Biopsies can be performed on many areas of the body, including the skin, stomach, kidneys, liver, and lungs. The method used depends on the location of the tissue.
Types of Biopsies
- Needle biopsy: A thin or core needle is used to collect tissue, often with imaging guidance (such as ultrasound or CT scan).
- Endoscopic or laparoscopic biopsy: A small scope is inserted into the body to help the physician collect tissue samples.
- Surgical (open) biopsy: An incision is made to directly access and remove tissue for testing.
What to Expect
- Depending on the type of biopsy, you may receive local anesthesia to numb the area, sedation to help you relax, or general anesthesia so you sleep through the procedure.
- Most biopsies are minimally invasive, and discomfort is usually mild.
- Your care team will explain the procedure and recovery process in detail before you begin.
Why Biopsies Matter
- Help confirm or rule out cancer and other conditions
- Provide critical details that guide treatment decisions
- Allow for personalized care based on genetic or molecular markers
