What is a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a low-dose X-ray test that measures bone density. It’s the most accurate way to screen for osteoporosis and assess your risk for fractures.

DEXA scans are quick, painless, and typically measure bone mineral content in the hip or spine. The results help your doctor make decisions about bone health, prevention strategies, or treatment.

Why You Might Need a DEXA Scan

Doctors recommend DEXA scans for people who:

  • Are postmenopausal women or men over 50
  • Have a family history of osteoporosis
  • Have experienced previous fractures
  • Take medications that affect bone health

DEXA Scan vs. Bone Scan

It’s important to note that DEXA scans are different from bone scans. Bone scans are a nuclear medicine test that usually requires an injection and are used to detect fractures, infections, cancer, or other bone abnormalities.

Preparing for a DEXA Scan

No special preparation is usually needed. You may be asked to avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before your test. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons.
