What Is Neuroendoscopy?
Neuroendoscopy is a minimally invasive neurosurgical technique used to treat certain conditions of the brain and spinal cord. Using small, flexible endoscopes equipped with cameras and surgical instruments, neurosurgeons can access deep areas of the brain through very small openings. This approach reduces trauma, lowers complication risks, and often leads to faster recovery times compared to traditional surgery.
Conditions Treated with Neuroendoscopy
- Hydrocephalus - Treated with procedures like endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) to restore normal cerebrospinal fluid flow without the need for a shunt.
- Brain Tumors - Certain tumors located in the ventricles or near the skull base can be removed or biopsied through endoscopic approaches.
- Pituitary Adenomas - Accessed via the nasal passages using endonasal endoscopic techniques, allowing for tumor removal without opening the skull.
- Colloid Cysts - Endoscopic removal of cysts in the third ventricle with minimal disruption to surrounding brain tissue.
- Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH) - Evacuation of blood clots and debris from the brain's ventricular system to relieve pressure and prevent complications.
- Arachnoid Cysts - Fenestration and drainage of cysts to relieve symptoms and improve fluid flow.
Benefits of Neuroendoscopy
- Smaller incisions and less scarring.
- Reduced risk of infection and complications.
- Shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
- Improved access to deep-seated brain structures.
- Enhanced visualization with high-definition optics.
