What Is Non-Invasive Vascular Testing?

Non-invasive vascular testing uses advanced imaging technology to evaluate the health and function of your blood vessels. These tests are painless, safe, and do not require surgery, helping doctors detect vascular disease, locate blockages, and determine severity. Some tests may also evaluate blood flow during exercise.

Types of Non-Invasive Vascular Tests

• Carotid Ultrasound – Measures blood flow through the carotid arteries to the brain, helping detect narrowing or blockages that could increase stroke risk.
• Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound – Examines the size of the aorta, the major artery that carries blood from the heart to the body.
• Venous Ultrasound – Evaluates circulation in the veins of the arms and legs, commonly used to detect blood clots.
• Lower Extremity Arterial Evaluation – Includes ankle-brachial index testing or pulse volume recording to assess blood flow to the legs, often used when leg pain occurs with activity and improves with rest.
• Renal Artery Ultrasound – Measures blood flow to the kidneys, often recommended for patients with severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Once completed, results are reviewed by a physician, and additional testing or treatment may be recommended based on findings.

What to Expect During the Test

• You may be asked to lie or sit on an examination table.
• A small amount of gel is applied to the skin over the area being tested.
• A trained technician passes a transducer (wand) over the gel-covered area to capture images of your blood vessels.
• You may feel slight pressure or minimal discomfort as the transducer moves across the skin.
• Digital images are recorded and sent to your physician for review.
