What is a Post-Void Residual Volume Test?

A post-void residual (PVR) volume test measures the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. This test helps doctors identify the cause of bladder dysfunction, urinary retention, or other urinary issues.

What To Expect

There are two ways to measure post-void residual volume:

  • In-and-Out Catheterization: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. The catheter drains and measures any remaining urine.
  • Ultrasound: You lie down while a clinician moves a wand-like device (transducer) over your bladder. The transducer sends sound waves through the skin, which bounce back as echoes. The device then calculates the amount of urine left in the bladder - a painless and non-invasive method.
