What is a Treadmill Stress Test?
A treadmill stress test evaluates how well your coronary arteries deliver blood to the heart muscle when your heart is working harder. The test monitors your heart’s electrical activity (via EKG), heart rate, and blood pressure as the treadmill gradually increases in speed and incline.
This test helps doctors assess:
- Coronary artery function.
- Exercise capacity and overall fitness.
- Signs of significant artery narrowing or heart disease.
At Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care, our experienced physicians use advanced equipment and software to provide a comprehensive range of cardiac studies, including treadmill stress tests.
What to Expect During the Test
- Preparation: A technician places sticky patches (electrodes) on your chest, arms, and legs to monitor heart activity. A blood pressure cuff measures changes during exercise.
- Exercise Portion: You will walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed and incline. Walking continues until you are too tired, reach your target heart rate, or sufficient information is collected.
- Monitoring Symptoms: Report any chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or other symptoms immediately.
- Completion: After the test, electrodes are removed, and results are reviewed and sent to the ordering physician.
