Glossary AZ
Huntington's Disease

Huntington's disease is an inherited disease that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. Huntington's disease has a broad impact on a person's functional abilities and usually results in movement, thinking and psychiatric disorders.

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Some cancers, including primary colon, stomach, appendix, and ovarian cancers that have spread to the lining of the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity, can be challenging to treat effectively with standard chemotherapy, even after surgery to remove the visible tumor.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism develops when the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck called the thyroid is too active and produces an excess of hormones.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs when the muscle mass of the left ventricle of the heart is thicker than normal, or the wall between the two ventricles (septum) becomes enlarged and obstructs the blood flow from the left ventricle. Because it prevents the heart from properly relaxing between beats, it fills with less blood, which limits the amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat. A heart murmur may be heard, which is related to the obstruction below the aortic valve (valve between the left ventricle and the aorta).

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a common condition that occurs when the thyroid gland – the small, butterfly-shaped organ in the neck –doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones.

Hysterectomy, Salpingectomy, and Oophorectomy

Cooper University Health Care offers a number of surgical procedures to help transgender men and non-binary individuals better align their physical bodies with their gender identity.

Iliac Artery Aneurysm

An iliac aneurysm is bulging and weakness in the wall of one of the iliac arteries. A large iliac aneurysm can burst, which can cause life-threatening, uncontrolled internal bleeding.

Important Information About Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer originates in the cervix, a connective tissue at the lower portion of the uterus connecting to the vagina. Each year, about 14,000 women in the United States learn they have cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the most common types to affect a woman’s reproductive organs. Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

In-line Vasectomy Procedure

Each year, more than 500,000 American men receive vasectomies for permanent birth control.
