What is insomnia?
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the United States today. You may have insomnia if you have experienced one or more of these symptoms:
- You have a hard time falling asleep.
- You struggle to stay asleep, or you wake up frequently during the night.
- You wake up too early, and you are unable to go back to sleep.
Insomnia can be present together with other medical and psychological problems, and it can be worsened by stress. Older adults, women, or those suffering from certain medical or mental health problems are at increased risk for insomnia.
Insomnia and the lack of sleep caused by insomnia can lead to:
- Moodiness and irritability.
- Anxiety about being able to fall asleep or about getting good quality sleep.
- Sleepiness or fatigue.
- Lack of concentration and poor memory.
- Poor work or school performance.
- Lack of motivation.
- Headaches.
- Motor vehicle accidents.
- Workplace accidents.
