At MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, our Brain Tumor Program offers stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)—a noninvasive, highly targeted form of radiation therapy used to treat brain tumors and conditions such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and trigeminal neuralgia.
Despite its name, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is not a surgical procedure. Instead, SRS powered by the Brain Lab system integrates ultra-high-resolution imaging with AI-driven, computer-guided targeting to deliver precise beams of radiation to treat abnormal tissue in the brain. This approach allows for treatment with sub-millimeter accuracy, and is usually completed in one or a just a few outpatient sessions.
Because of its precision, SRS helps protect healthy brain tissue, reduces side effects, and shortens recovery time. It’s especially useful for treating tumors located in sensitive or hard-to-reach areas of the brain. Most patients to return to their normal routines with minimal disruption.
Conditions Treated With SRS
SRS is used to manage a variety of conditions, including:
- Metastatic brain tumors (from primary cancers such as lung, breast, kidney, colon, or melanoma).
- Primary brain tumors, including:
- Glioblastoma.
- Astrocytoma.
- Glioma.
- Meningioma.
- Pituitary tumors.
- Acoustic neuroma.
- Intraventricular tumors.
- Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
- Trigeminal neuralgia.
- Recurrent or residual tumors following surgery or conventional radiation.
A Collaborative, Multidisciplinary Approach
MD Anderson at Cooper takes a team approach to cancer care, with a team of specialists from all cancer specialties working together.
The Brain Tumor Program team includes specialists in neurosurgery, radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, neuroradiology, and neuropathology. This collaborative approach means that each patient receives a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan and a team of experts focused on their care.
Specialized Expertise and Support
- Fellowship-trained neurosurgeons skilled in minimally invasive, image-guided procedures.
- Radiation oncologists with focused experience in stereotactic radiosurgery.
- Specially trained radiation therapists and nurses.
- Access to clinical trials and innovative treatment protocols.
- Comprehensive support services, including neuropsychology, physical and occupational rehabilitation, survivorship care, nurse navigators and patient care coordinators, social work services, and psychological support.
Patient-Centered Care
We understand that a brain tumor diagnosis can be overwhelming. Through a combination of precision medicine, compassionate care, and ongoing support, we aim to help patients maintain quality of life throughout their treatment journey and beyond.
