Every year, millions of Americans survive critical illness; but despite the efforts of their ICU, many are left with ongoing physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges long after they leave the hospital. Traditional health care systems often fall short in supporting this part of a patient’s recovery.

Cooper University Health Care has a multidisciplinary group that helps patients and families recover after their ICU and beyond. We participate in the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s THRIVE initiative, a national effort to support patients and families after a stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

As one of the busiest ICUs in the region that accepts patients from area hospitals, Cooper understands that emotional as well as physical healing is important in post-hospital recovery. One way we support patients and families is through a support group of former ICU patients and their family members.
