Cancer Outreach, Education, and Screening Program

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is committed to a strong and healthy community. The Cancer, Outreach, Education, and Screening program focuses on addressing disparities to improve cancer outcomes in our community.

As part of our cancer prevention and early detection efforts, we provide free cancer outreach, education, and screening services to men and women residing in Camden County, New Jersey. Through the Camden County Cancer Screening Program, we provide breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancer screening; and smoking cessation and counseling. 

Services also include:

  • Diagnostic testing for screening participants with abnormalities
  • Educational programs for the community
  • Patient navigation services for persons with abnormal results
  • One-on-one counseling and case management services as needed
  • Transportation assistance
  • Emotional support
  • Follow-up care post-diagnosis and treatment for those diagnosed with a malignancy.

Cancer screenings are available at conveniently located radiology and clinic sites.

Eligibility

To be eligible for free clinical screening services, persons must have an income of no more than 250 percent above the poverty level, and meet the following criteria for specific cancer screenings:

Cervical Cancer

  • Women 21 and over

Prostate Cancer

  • African-American men, and men with a family history of prostate cancer, at age 40 and older
  • Men with no family history at age 45 and older

Breast Cancer

  • Women 40 and older
  • Women under 40 who have a family history or breast abnormality or concern

Colorectal cancer

  • Men and women 45 and older
  • Persons under 45 who have a family history

Lung cancer

  • Men and women 50-80 years of age
  • Who are current smokers, or former smokers who have quit within the past 15 years
  • And have a 20 pack-year smoking history (For example, one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years).

The Camden County Screening Project at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper is part of the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJCEED) Program, which is funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and ScreenNJ, a statewide program in partnership with the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the NJ Department of Health, and healthcare and community organizations across New Jersey.
